Animating engineering that happens out of sight

Ground improvement is finished before anyone can see it. The rammed aggregate pier goes in, the soil closes over it, and the customer is asked to trust a process they will never watch happen. So we built the version they could watch.

The problem

You can't photograph a process that happens underground

Ground improvement works entirely below grade. By the time the site is backfilled there is nothing to show — no visible product, no finished object, no photograph that explains what was paid for.

That puts the whole sales conversation on the engineer's ability to describe it. Cross-section diagrams help, but they are static and they assume a reader who already understands the mechanics. Geopier needed something that could carry the explanation on its own, to people who aren't geotechnical engineers.

The approach

Cut the ground away and let the camera in

Animation solves a problem photography can't: it can remove the soil. The build treats the ground itself as a set piece — sectioned, peeled back, made transparent at exactly the moment the viewer needs to see through it.

  1. Script from the specs

    Storyboard built directly from Geopier's engineering documentation, so the sequence of installation is accurate before a single frame is modeled.

  2. Build the subsurface

    Soil strata, aggregate, and equipment modeled and animated in 3D — the pier forming and compacting in a cutaway view no camera could ever capture.

  3. Overlay and cut down

    Motion graphic callouts label what's happening as it happens, then the master is recut into shorter versions sized for paid social and display.

The outcome

A 3D explainer to be deployed across the campaign

The asset does double duty. It's campaign creative, but it's also the thing an engineer can put on screen in a room full of people who need to approve a method they've never seen performed.
